Saluki watercolour

Saluki Watercolour on Saunders Waterford NOT

Tonight I'm sharing one of my recent(ish) commissions. As it says, it's a watercolour, 16" x 20", on my favourite paper Saunders Waterford NOT. For those of you who don't know, NOT stands for not hot pressed which means that the surface has a small amount of texture rather than the completely smooth surface of hot pressed.

If you have any comments/questions, please feel free to either leave a comment here or email me at info@azpaintings.com

Saluki Head Study

Saluki - Ch Glenoak Ishaara 20" x 16" watercolour

As Dean Grey at Exploding Doughnut commented that he had never seen a saluki before, I thought I would post another one here - this time a head study.

Saluki

 Saluki - Joop - 20" x 16" watercolour
After the short legged dachshunds, I thought today a rather longer legged hound might be fun. Unlike dachshunds, salukis hunt by sight not scent and they are both very elegant and very fast! It is said that as a breed they tend to be rather aloof with strangers, so I was somewhat surprised when I went to a saluki show a couple of years ago and was met with many wagging tails and affectionate greetings. I suppose some have that 'stand-offish' temperament but clearly a lot don't!

Saluki In Surrey, England

Saluki In Surrey, England - 5" x 7" (approx) oil on hardboard/masonite

In this painting, I have painted a saluki and placed it on a hill called St. Martha's Hill which is near where I live in Surrey, England. There is a very old church on top of this hill and the only normal access there is by foot or horse or pushbike. There are wide ranging views from this hill and in this painting the hills in the far distance, are the South Downs. St. Martha's is on the North Downs. There are lots of fabulous dog walks all around here and this is one of our favourites - actually we have quite a lot of favourites! - and our dogs love running off leash through the trees and bracken. The North Downs way is a long-distance footpath of about 155 miles but we haven't walked that far!

In The Purple by Anne Zoutsos

In The Purple - 10" x 8" oil on hardboard/masonite

The model for this painting is a royally bred champion owned by a fellow artist who has very generously made photos of her available as a basis for reference. I think it is fitting that this much loved girl will be able to help raise funds for salukis in need.
